Berlin (dpa) - According to managing director Mariette Rissenbeek, significantly fewer tickets will be sold for the Berlinale, despite the postponement to the summer.

The film festival has been postponed due to the pandemic: a digital industry get-together is planned for March and a public festival for June.

At the moment they are still in coordination with venues and open-air cinemas, Rissenbeek told rbb-Inforadio in an interview that was broadcast on Tuesday.

Only then will she have an overview of the number of presentations.

Last year around 330,000 tickets were sold.

"I can't think of a specific number at the moment, but I guess we're (...) very, very far below that," said Rissenbeek.

That also means less income.

The federal government has promised financial support, and new sponsors are also expected.

Alongside Cannes and Venice, the Berlin film festival is one of the world's major film festivals.

Every year filmmakers compete for the Golden Bear and other awards.

A jury decides on the winners.

It is unclear whether journalists will also be able to see the films in March.

You would have to speak to the rights holders for every film, said Rissenbeek.

The audience will see the festival especially in June.

Cinemas and other facilities are currently closed nationwide due to the corona virus, and distance rules also apply.

Isn't there currently an oversupply of new films?

The Berlinale had about 200 more registrations than for the 2020 edition, said Rissenbeek.

At the same time, there is a need to exploit many films that are in the pipeline - so that some rights holders may decide to sell them to television or a streaming platform.

Not everyone could wait.
