Berlin / Schwerin (dpa) - Climate activists from “Fridays for Future” and “Ende Terrain” protested on Tuesday in front of the SPD headquarters in Berlin against the further construction of the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline.

The groups reject a foundation with which the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to support the completion of the Baltic Sea gas pipeline.

Two posters read: “Clean natural gas is a dirty lie” and “Pipeline into crisis?

Not with us!".

Further protests were also announced in front of the Schwerin State Chancellery and in Lubmin near Greifswald, where the pipeline, which has been laid under water and largely completed, is coming to the mainland.

Last week, the Schwerin state parliament cleared the way for the establishment of a state-owned environmental foundation. The foundation, which is oriented towards the common good, aims to promote projects in the field of environmental, nature and climate protection, but also to be able to be commercially active. The foundation plans to buy components and machines that are essential for the completion of the gas pipeline. This is intended to circumvent threatened US sanctions against companies involved in building the line as far as possible.
