Today, the benefit tax means that it is often cheaper to drive a company car than to own the same car privately.

The government's proposal will offset the costs, so as not to subsidize car use.

But SVT's calculations show that the new proposal strikes very differently depending on the car model.

A small electric car like the Renault Zoe will be SEK 1,800 more expensive a month.

A large BMW X5, which is a diesel SUV, will be SEK 480 cheaper than today.

Most car models become 25-30 percent more expensive to drive as a company car as the benefit tax increases from 9 percent to 13 percent of the market value.

Can lead to more people buying a car privately

But the proposal, combined with other changes, hits hard on the most popular green cars, the plug-in hybrids.

Previously, these received a 40 percent discount on the benefit value, however, a maximum of SEK 10,000.

That discount disappeared at the turn of the year.

Even with the new proposal, it will pay to choose an environmentally friendly car.

But the fact that company cars generally become so much more expensive may mean that more people choose to buy a car privately instead.

Johan Linder, business area manager at Carpayfleet, one of the country's largest financiers of company cars, believes so.

- Maybe more people will choose a used fossil car instead and then the entire conversion of the car fleet will be delayed, says Johan Linder.

Most new green cars are company cars

Every third new car in 2020 was rechargeable - often a charging hybrid, which was a new record.

But it is the company car market that accounts for most new green cars.

Few private individuals dare to buy and can afford new electric cars and plug-in hybrids, says the industry organization Bil Sweden, which is critical of parts of the proposal.

- We must understand that the company car market is crucial for many rechargeable cars to come on the market, says Jessica Alenius, vice president at Bil Sweden.

The government also wants to abolish the so-called "luxury car supplement".

An extra tax that is currently available on benefit cars that costs more than 7.5 basic amounts, ie more than SEK 350,000.

The change means that expensive cars can even have reduced costs as a company car compared to today.
