Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Hamburg's most famous subway line 3 will be closed for 14 months due to construction work on February 1 between the Hauptbahnhof Süd and Baumwall stops.

On the more than 100-year-old route, the tunnel trough between the Rathausmarkt and Rödingsmarkt stops must be replaced by a new building, said Jens-Günter Lang, board member of Hochbahn-Technik, on Monday.

In addition, the Rathausmarkt and Mönckebergstrasse stops and the 861-meter-long tunnel are being renovated.

For the work, according to Hochbahn, the Mönckbergsteraße above ground must also be closed for six months between March and August. As a replacement for the U3, which is used by around 60,000 people every day outside of Corona times, there is the S-Bahn and numerous bus lines. The elevated railway put the total cost of the project at around 86 million euros.
