Viersen (dpa) - With a smart reaction, an 81-year-old woman in Viersen, Lower Rhine, let a telephone fraudster run up.

The stranger had answered the phone with the question "Do you know who is here?" To ask for money with the relative trick.

As the police in Viersen announced on Monday, the old lady saw through it and asked back: "Are you the older or the younger daughter?"

When the caller pretended to be the older daughter, everything was clear - because the 81-year-old has only one son.

The elderly woman hung up.

"Great reaction," praised the police and took the opportunity to warn against fraudsters who steal money from good-willed people with the relative trick.

The scam occurs again and again nationwide.

A variant of this is the grandchildren trick, in which criminals pretend to be grandchildren on the phone in order to get money.
