Berlin (dpa / bb) - The first batches of corona vaccine from the US manufacturer Moderna are due to arrive in Berlin on Tuesday.

The health administration announced this on request on Monday, without giving any further details about the expected amount.

In the previous week there was talk of 2400 cans - initially a rather small amount.

Afterwards, it was said a few days ago, deliveries in increasing volumes are planned about every two weeks.

The Moderna drug was approved as the second corona vaccine in the EU a few days ago.

It is considered to be just as effective, but a little less complicated to use than the Biontech / Pfizer product, which has been vaccinated in Berlin since December 27th.

So far around 88,000 doses of this vaccine have been delivered to Berlin.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, a good 32,000 people were vaccinated against Corona up to and including January 10th.

As long as it is scarce, half of the vaccine delivered is put aside in order to be able to give the person vaccinated for the first time the second vaccination necessary for immunization a few weeks apart.

The new Moderna vaccine is to be injected in the vaccination center in the Erika Hess ice stadium in Wedding.

When exactly this second vaccination center after the arena in Treptow will open, the health administration could not say exactly on Monday.

Last was Thursday.

Health Senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD) announced at the weekend that people in Berlin can choose which vaccine they want to be immunized against corona with.

Anyone who is invited to be vaccinated should be able to choose a vaccination center that offers the substance of their choice.

Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU), on the other hand, emphasized again on Monday that there would be no option.

Berlin is planning a total of six vaccination centers for the first phase of the vaccination campaign.
