Sahlgrenska's thoracic ward receives patients who need intensive care after surgery or transplantation of the heart or lungs.

According to the lex-Maria report submitted by the ward's chief physician, the corona outbreak began with a patient in the ward who was affected by breathing being infected with covid-19.

At the same time, the hospital discovered that two more who were in the same ward, but were discharged, were positive for covid-19.

A total of 19 patients became infected

After screening, three more cases were discovered and after extensive infection tracking work, it turned out that a total of 19 patients who were cared for or had been cared for in the ward during the current period had been diagnosed with infection.

For the 19 patients, the symptoms varied from severe to mild and some had to be intensively cared for, but in most cases it was not possible to ascertain where the infection came from.

Six patients died during the period and according to the report, the corona outbreak in the ward was a contributing cause to some of the cases.

"All of these patients had underlying disease and had undergone extensive surgery," the report states.
