During the second corona wave, Skåne has been hit harder than Stockholm, if you compare, for example, the number of patients who receive hospital care for covid-19.

- A big difference is that Skåne was affected much more mildly this spring and that we thus have fewer immune people than in Stockholm.

That is certainly part of the explanation, says Skåne's infection control doctor Eva Melander during a digital press conference where, among other things, the county administrative board and the police also participated.

Altered virus strains?

Another reason may be that the virus may have changed and that these new strains are spreading more in Skåne right now than in other parts of the country, says Melander.

- We have no scientific evidence for that yet, but we are making an effort now.

Therefore, we have intensified the typing of our virus strains now.

We can only speculate, we can not explain, says the infection control doctor.

During the spring, Skåne had at most around 100 inpatients - of which around 20–25 received intensive care - in a single day.

On Monday, January 11, 571 people received care for covid-19, of which 62 patients were in intensive care.

On Thursday, 630 patients were cared for in Scanian hospitals, but even then the number of IVA patients was 62 people.

In Stockholm, at most around 1,100 people were cared for for covid-19 in April.

A total of 685 patients are now being cared for in hospitals in the region, of which just over 80 receive IVA care, according to figures from the Stockholm Region on Friday.

Vaccinate staff

The country's regions recently agreed that certain healthcare professionals should be given priority and receive the corona vaccine earlier than planned.

In Skåne, the start is already underway on Monday, and the first to receive the vaccine are staff in emergency rooms and emergency departments, such as intensive care, infection wards and ambulance operations.

On Tuesday, Stockholm plans to begin its vaccination of certain healthcare staff, according to an earlier press release from the region.
