The Portuguese president,
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa,
has tested positive for covid-19 this Monday but is
asymptomatic
, a week after having contact with an advisor who was later diagnosed with coronavirus.
"After the President of the Republic tested negative yesterday, and despite the fact that today's antigen test was negative, it was now known, at 9:40 p.m., that
the PCR tested positive," the
Presidency reported in a note.
The
72-year-old
head of state
is asymptomatic and canceled his entire schedule for the next few days, and will remain isolated in the Palace of Belém, where he was working when the test result was known.
The positive of Rebelo de Sousa occurs
just 13 days before the presidential elections
of January 24, where he stands for re-election.
Last Wednesday it became known that one of the president's advisers, with whom he had contact on Monday, had tested positive for coronavirus.
Rebelo de Sousa gave negative in the tests carried out that day and the health authorities considered that
the contact was "low risk",
so it was not necessary for him to remain isolated.
Even so, they asked him for "passive surveillance" for 14 days and to get away from the crowds.
The president then decided to
suspend his electoral campaign actions
until the 18th and carry out a moderate activity, which in recent days has focused on debates and interviews.
Rebelo de Sousa is the
clear favorite for reelection
for a second five-year term, as polls give him victory in the first round with about 60% of the vote.
