Berlin (dpa) - In view of the ongoing difficulties with overloaded learning platforms for schools, the new President of the Conference of Ministers of Education, Britta Ernst, is promoting understanding among frustrated children and parents.

That servers in schools sometimes do not work is annoying, said the Brandenburg Education Minister (SPD) on Monday evening in the ARD “Tagesthemen”.

"But what we have missed in the past five to eight years in initiatives for digital education, we will not make up in six to nine months."

She added: "I admit we would like to be elsewhere."

When asked why empty theaters or exhibition halls cannot be rented for the schools, Ernst said that the idea was good, but could be implemented to a limited extent because one group did not come together for the whole day during lessons.

On the subject of school closings, she said that the ministers of education did not want any automatism based on the infection statistics.

"We want to take a closer look and assess the overall situation."

After the end of the Christmas holidays across Germany, most schools in Germany started a phase of distance learning, of which it is not yet clear how long it will last.

With the exception of graduating classes, “homeschooling” initially applies to almost all students.

At the beginning of lessons on Monday there were some problems with learning platforms again.

On January 14, Ernst will officially take over the presidency from the Rhineland-Palatinate Education Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD).

Ernst wants to place its chairmanship under the topic of "Teaching and learning and good teaching in the times of digital transformation".
