Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - According to the will of the Greens, Saxony-Anhalt should become climate neutral by 2035.

The demand is a central component of a draft for the ruling party's election manifesto, which the top candidate Cornelia Lüddemann, party leader Sebastian Striegel and Environment Minister Claudia Dalbert (Greens) presented to media representatives at a press conference on Monday.

In addition to the core issue of climate protection, the protection of democracy should also play an important role in the Greens election campaign, and the party is calling for a longer-term strategy in the fight against Corona.

The aim of the Greens is to expand their result of 5 percent in the state elections in 2016 and also to belong to the next state government.

Thanks to Environment Minister Dalbert, a lot has already happened in climate protection in Saxony-Anhalt, said Lüddemann.

However, the country would have to «not just add a shovel, we would have to add a whole excavator».

The aim is "that we significantly expand the foundations that we have created in the next legislature," said the group leader of the Greens in the state parliament.

Lüddemann emphasized that the almost 150-page draft was not only looking at the next five years, but also the time thereafter.

Dalbert demanded that the country should firmly commit to climate goals, as the federal government did with the Paris climate agreement.

"We're running out of time, that's why we need commitment," said Dalbert.

The Greens want to establish this obligation with a climate protection law.

Another central role is to be the strengthening of democracy.

Party leader Striegel announced that, among other things, he wanted to lower the voting age for state elections to 14 and make the work of government agencies more transparent.

The Greens do not want to finally decide on the election manifesto until a party conference in April.

On Tuesday, the draft is to be presented to members and interested parties on an online event.

They should then have the opportunity to influence the program at various discussion events until April.

The chairwoman of the federal party, Annalena Baerbock, is expected at the online event.
