A fire broke out shortly before 8 a.m. on Monday morning in a building rue Lauth, in the Contades district in Strasbourg.

The fire affected an apartment of 70 m² located on the third of the four floors, according to the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) of Bas-Rhin, which mobilized 25 firefighters on the event.

The five victims were able to be evacuated, one by the staircase, the others by ladder.

Four had been poisoned by carbon monoxide and were transported to Hautepierre hospital.

A total of four dwellings were affected by the smoke and 24 people had to leave the building.

All have been accommodated in a nearby gymnasium and four families will have to be relocated.
