The Washington Post, citing law enforcement officials, said that a police officer committed suicide during a congressional storming by supporters of US President Donald Trump last Wednesday.

The newspaper said the officer was found to have committed suicide two days after the congressional attack.

The US Metropolitan Police announced that 4 people were killed in the events of the storming of Congress, including a woman who was shot dead by security men, while 14 of its members were wounded.

Federal Capital Police Chief Robert Conte said during a press conference that an investigation had been opened to determine the circumstances of the woman being shot.

Later, the US Capitol Police, tasked with protecting Congress, said that a police officer named Brian Secnick died late last Thursday from wounds sustained while dealing with the riots led by Trump supporters on Wednesday in the US Congress.

Security officials acknowledged that the Congressional police were unable to confront the large crowds that stormed the building.

The Congressional police force did not request advance support to secure the building from other federal agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security, and the National Guard reinforcements that the city mayor summoned were not mobilized for more than an hour, after protesters broke through security barriers.

When the Congressional police requested support from other security services, the protesters had already entered the building. Adding to the delays in this assistance is that the police present their reports and requests to congressional leaders who are in contact with other law enforcement agencies.
