Hanover (dpa / lni) - The state authorities receive 20 million euros for the purchase of e-cars and the installation of charging stations.

The state government decided on Monday to invest with money from the Corona special fund.

"As a country, we want to set a good example in the expansion of e-mobility," said Economics Minister Bernd Althusmann (CDU).

At the same time, a high proportion of emission-free or low-emission electric drives in the state's own vehicles should make a contribution to climate protection.

The opposition had accused the state government of taking on unnecessarily high debts in the Corona crisis and complained that the special fund for coping with the epidemic was also used to finance purchases such as the new official cars.

This has nothing to do with the crisis.

The Minister of Economic Affairs now emphasized that by supporting public investments, the government was curbing the weakened demand for new vehicles as a result of the pandemic for the economy.

The country's 20 million euro program is aimed at all departments.

In future, they should take electric vehicles into account as far as possible when new purchases are necessary or the regular replacement of vehicles.

The state government itself is not yet a great role model in the use of e-cars.

Almost all cabinet members are still in heavy duty limousines with internal combustion engines.

After all, some drive a hybrid variant in which an electric part of the drive supports the combustion engine.

According to a survey by the Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW), Lower Saxony is also mediocre when it comes to the public charging network for electric cars.
