The officials of the EU border protection agency Frontex are given their own uniforms.

The permanent reserve of the European Border and Coast Guard will in future wear a uniform in navy blue with the inscription “Frontex” on the back, as a video clip published by Frontex on Twitter on Monday shows.

"For the first time the EU has its own uniformed service," said Frontex.

The standing reserve is to be expanded to 10,000 civil servants by 2027.

Frontex was recently criticized for reports that the border guards were involved in illegally rejecting migrants in the Aegean Sea.

At the beginning of December, head Fabrice Leggeri rejected this allegation in the EU Parliament's interior committee.

No evidence was found that there was an active direct or indirect involvement of Frontex staff or officials deployed by Frontex in so-called pushbacks.

In October, the magazine “Spiegel” and the ARD magazine “Report Mainz” reported that Greek border guards had driven inflatables with migrants on board towards Turkey.

They relied on information from those affected and video recordings.

Such so-called pushbacks are illegal under international law.

Frontex officials have been nearby on several of these actions since April 2020, according to reports.
