Memmingen (dpa / lby) - The sale of a property at Memmingen Airport for the construction of an Amazon distribution center is off the table.

Allgäu Airport GmbH has withdrawn a bid for this property, but now wants to implement the project elsewhere, it announced on Monday.

«We did not expect this kind of resistance», said the chairwoman of the advisory board, Bettina Kurrle.

The airport wanted to buy a piece of land owned by the Gewerbepark am Allgäu Airport (GAP) company, which mostly belongs to rural districts and cities. Buildings were to be erected on top and leased to Amazon for 15 years. "The local authorities involved in the company would have benefited 75 percent from the sale," said Kurrle. The plans for the planned distribution center were characterized by low space consumption, connection to the district heating network and photovoltaics on the roofs. According to the Employment Agency, up to 200 employees could work in the center and up to 600 more at delivery partners.
