Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune returned this Sunday to Germany to seek treatment for "complications" in one foot following his recent contamination by Covid-19, opening a new period of absence at the head of the Algeria.

This return to Germany comes less than two weeks after a first stay which had kept him away from the management of the largest country in the Maghreb for two long months.

"Not long ago, the President of the Republic, Abdelmajid Tebboune, left for Germany to treat foot complications after being sick with Covid-19", it is written in a statement posted on the Facebook account of the Algerian presidency.

A very vague stay

No details were disclosed on the nature of the "complications" or on the duration of the new medical stay of the Algerian president in Germany.

“My return to Germany was planned, as the doctors had programmed, to continue the treatment protocol.

I would like the duration of my medical trip to be very short, ”Abdelmadjid Tebboune explained before his departure in a brief statement broadcast by public television.

According to a recent French study, intubated and ventilated Covid-19 patients are at significant risk of suffering from phlebitis, i.e. the appearance of blood clots in their veins, with potentially consequences. serious.

"It is possible that I undergo a simple surgical operation on the foot", added Abdelmadjid Tebboune before committing to "follow the affairs of the State on a daily basis with all those responsible".

Urgent return for urgent signature

"The state is standing," he concluded.

Among the priorities of the agenda in charge of the Head of State are the development of the new electoral law for the next local and legislative elections and the launch of the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 “from January”.

National television broadcast this Sunday images of the Head of State in the honor lounge of the Boufarik military airport, near Algiers, where he was greeted by senior state officials - including the Chief of Staff of the Army, General Saïd Chengriha - before flying to Berlin.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune was to undergo this foot treatment before his return to Algeria, but as it was not of an urgent nature, it had been postponed due to the president's commitments related to the treatment of certain "urgent cases", according to the presidency. .

In fact, he had to return to Algiers in order to sign the 2021 finance law before December 31 and to promulgate the revision of the Constitution adopted by referendum on November 1.

President Tebboune, 75 years old and a heavy smoker, left Berlin on December 29 after hospitalization, followed by convalescence, after contracting the new coronavirus in October from his entourage in Algiers.

Incomplete healing

Hospitalized on October 27 in a military establishment in Algiers, he was urgently transferred to a specialized establishment in Germany on October 28.

Very few details have filtered out about his medical stay in Germany, including the place or places where he was admitted.

On his return to the country, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, having regained weight and apparently in good health, had suggested that he was almost completely healed.

He was, however, wearing a brace on his right foot, according to screenshots from a TV video.
