Cottbus (dpa) - The coal-fired power plants of Leag in Lausitz and also the opencast mines have been working at full capacity since the beginning of the year in order to secure the power supply.

The background is therefore the so-called “dark lull” by the energy industry at this time of year, when solar power and wind power hardly make a contribution.

The sun does not come through and there is no wind for a long time.

This is not an unusual situation in the dark season, said Leag spokesman Thoralf Schirmer.

"We are prepared for it."

Schirmer reported that a 500-megawatt block in the Boxberg power plant (Saxony) is currently not connected to the grid due to planned repair work.

The block is expected to start operating again at the end of the week.

According to Leag, the lignite power plants of the Lausitz energy company can provide the German power grid with more than 7,000 megawatts of power.

The winter weather made the miners in the opencast mines to create at the beginning of January, because they had to clear some conveyor belts with gradual restart of the wet and heavy snow.

The coal connection line and also the mine drainage are ready for use, the Leag said.

The power plants Jänschwalde (Spree-Neiße), Schwarze Pump in Spremberg (Spree-Neiße) and Boxberg (Görlitz) can, according to the company, also wholly or partially Leipzig, Supplying Cottbus, Peitz, Spremberg, Hoyerswerda, Boxberg and Weißwasser with district heating.
