Berlin (dpa) - Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has met with criticism from the CDU and the Greens with his offer to the USA to work out a “Marshall Plan for Democracy”.

Although Maas' analysis is correct that every crisis of democracy in the USA also has an impact on Germany, said the CDU foreign politician Johann David Wadephul of the German press agency.

"We shouldn't appear as senior teachers towards the oldest Western democracy."

After storming the Capitol in Washington, Maas had offered the United States greater cooperation in the fight for democracy.

«We must not give space to the enemies of liberal democracy.

This applies not only in the USA, but also here in Germany and Europe, ”said the SPD politician.

"We are ready to work with the USA on a joint Marshall Plan for democracy."

The Greens foreign politician Omid Nouripour was irritated by Maas' offer to the USA.

If US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had offered Germany help when demonstrators had penetrated the stairs of the Reichstag building in Berlin, "we would all have torn him up in the air," said Nouripour.

The Maas push will remain a “short-lived election gag”.

The Marshall Plan was an economic reconstruction program of the USA for European states after the Second World War, from which the Federal Republic of Germany particularly benefited.

Today the term is used again and again as a synonym for development programs.
