Potsdam (dpa / bb) - A 52-year-old woman from Potsdam caused an explosion in her apartment with burning sparklers.

When the sparklers burned down, the Christmas tree in the apartment caught fire on Saturday evening, the West Police Department announced on Sunday.

Then a decoration balloon filled with helium exploded.

The window of the balcony door burst as a result of the shock.

The tenant and her 56-year-old partner could have extinguished the fire themselves by the time the fire brigade arrived, the police reported.

However, the 56-year-old had to be taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.

The apartment was no longer habitable.
