Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) is today a guest speaker at the first digital New Year's reception of the North Rhine-Westphalian CDU.

At the start, NRW Prime Minister and CDU state party leader Armin Laschet speaks from a television studio in Cologne.

CSU boss Söder will then be switched live.

The CDU members can watch the New Year's reception on their computer at home.

One week before the online federal party conference of the CDU, at which the new CDU chairman is to be elected, there is great tension in the NRW-CDU as the largest regional association.

In addition to Laschet, ex-Union parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz and foreign politician Norbert Röttgen are applying for the federal chairmanship.

All three applicants come from NRW.

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn, who competes in the team with Laschet, also belongs to the North Rhine-Westphalian CDU.

The new CDU federal chairman is also considered a possible candidate for chancellor for the federal election in September.

In surveys, CSU boss Söder is usually well ahead on this topic.

Söder has not yet expressed any ambitions to run for chancellor.
