St. Anton (dpa) - Downhill skier Kira Weidle remains within striking distance of the world's best in the new calendar year.

The ski racer from Starnberg was tenth on the downhill run from St. Anton in Austria.

She was 1.48 seconds behind the outstanding winner Sofia Goggia.

The Olympic champion from Italy was significantly faster on the Arlberg than the second-placed Austrian Tamara Tippler (+0.96) and Breezy Johnson from the USA in third place (+1.04).

Before Christmas, Weidle had finished eleventh and fifth in the Schuss races in Val d'Isère and had shown her class in the first year after Viktoria Rebensburg had resigned.

Shortly before the holidays, the 24-year-old had to have an operation on her thumb;

in St. Anton the ski pole was stuck to the glove with tape.

At her premiere on the Karl Schranz slope in the winter sports resort in Tyrol, Weidle achieved a respectable performance, even if she shook her head dissatisfied at the finish.

The second German starter Michaela Wenig from Lenggries retired due to a driving error.

Goggia, on the other hand, showed a splendid run and celebrated the second victory on the third descent this winter.

In the discipline classification, the Italian is now ahead of Corinne Suter from Switzerland, who was the best downhill skier last year, and Johnson.

In the overall World Cup ranking, Petra Vlhova from Slovakia extended her lead (637) over Swiss Michelle Gisin (498).

On Sunday there will be a Super-G in St. Anton (11.30 a.m. / ZDF and Eurosport), like the previous events this winter, even without spectators.

Weidle and Wenig are back at the start for the DSV.
