Météo France has placed the two Corsican departments on orange avalanche alert between Saturday 4 p.m. and Sunday 4 p.m.

The unusual snowfall for the Isle of Beauty will be disrupted by warm weather accompanied by rain.

A situation that will lead to many avalanches predicts the national service.

Beware of avalanches in Corsica, Météo-France alert on Saturday due to unusual snow cover and warm weather accompanied by rain which will destabilize the snowpack.

The two Corsican departments are therefore placed on orange avalanche alert between Saturday 4 p.m. and Sunday 4 p.m.

"The snow cover on the massifs is unusual below 1,500 meters. (...) The arrival of the rain will quickly destabilize these snow coats", explains Météo-France in its bulletin.

Avoid all outings in the mountains

Saturday, the risk of avalanches will be "marked" on the Corsican massifs or even "strong" below 1,800 meters in the afternoon.

"Many avalanches will occur", predicts Météo-France with a risk of larger avalanches which could reach mountain roads at the end of the day with the intensification of the rain.

The peak of avalanche activity is expected overnight and a "high avalanche risk should remain on Sunday during the day" before gradually decreasing below 1,500 meters.

Consequently, Météo-France recommends avoiding any outing in the mountains.
