France: employees of the sports daily "L'Équipe" on strike against the social plan

In France, the readers of “L'Équipe” could not find their daily sports newspaper this Saturday because of a 24-hour strike.

It was organized at the call of the intersyndicale which denounces the social plan that affects the daily and its weeklies while several international deadlines are looming.

, around fifty jobs are threatened. 

Since the summer the group has been crossed by strong tensions.

At the origin of this situation, the financial difficulties resulting from the health crisis, the cessation of sports competitions, and more generally the decline in sales and advertising. 

As a solution, management proposed to cut wages and holidays by 10% in exchange for preserving jobs.

As the employees opposed this proposal, management announced last October a reorganization project and a workforce reduction plan.

Several points arouse the anger of the inter-union, and in particular the starting conditions much lower than those during the previous plans.

Employees refuse to be an adjustment variable to the detriment of journalistic excellence, as they say.

They refuse to work with less means, to neglect small sports, or to see rugby less well followed, while a World Cup will be organized in France in 2023.
