77 percent of Germans are in favor of staying out of a conflict between the USA and the People's Republic of China.

This was the result of a survey by Infratest Dimap, which WELT AM SONNTAG commissioned shortly before Christmas.

When asked how the federal government should behave in the event of a conflict between the two states, only 17 percent spoke in favor of taking the side of the long-standing Western ally, the USA.

One percent would even side with China.

The desire for strict neutrality despite a close alliance with the USA since 1949 "expresses the desire to turn a blind eye to geopolitical reality, but if one ignores realities, they will strike all the harder," said the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Bundestag, Norbert Röttgen WELT AM SONNTAG.

Aside from Donald Trump's unpredictability, there will be no change of course in American China policy under Joe Biden, said the candidate for the CDU chairmanship.

“We should work realistically and from a position of strength for a cooperative relationship with China.

Hold out, that won't work.

In a globalized world we are far too interdependent for that. "

As far as defense policy is concerned, opinion in Germany is twofold.

When the NATO member states agreed to spend at least two percent of their gross domestic product on defense, and when asked whether the federal government should keep this agreement, 50 percent were in favor of keeping the promise.

42 percent of Germans are against it.

A majority would only come about if the supporters of the CDU (75 percent), the FDP (54 percent) and the SPD (50 percent) formed a coalition on this issue.

On the other hand, supporters of the Left Party are against keeping the promise with 82 percent, the Greens with 54, followed by AfD supporters with 45 percent.

Between December 15 and 17, Infratest Dimap surveyed 1006 people on behalf of WELT AM SONNTAG.
