The North Rhine-Westphalian state government has prevented the city of Cologne's vaccination center from opening prematurely and thus prevented vaccinations from being carried out earlier.

As WELT AM SONNTAG found out, shortly before Christmas the city administration approached the Ministry of Health with the information that there were not enough declarations of consent to inoculate the 3000 vaccine doses available at that time to nursing home residents;

at this point in time only 1,400 declarations were available.

The city asked to open the completed vaccination center and to be able to vaccinate people over 80 who live at home there.

In this way, it is said from administrative circles, the aim was to prevent valuable time from being lost right at the beginning of the vaccination campaign.

However, the ministry prohibited the city from taking this extraordinary measure.

At the request of WELT AM SONNTAG, the state government did not comment on the reasons, but stated in general: “The state government has decided to initially offer a vaccination offer exclusively to residents and employees in inpatient care facilities.

This against the background that the risk of severe disease and thus the risk of dying is by far the highest. "

Shortly before the weekend, around 6000 vaccine doses were available in Cologne.

According to the city, around 75 percent of these have so far been inoculated.

The fact that a significant proportion of nursing staff in the homes has so far refused to be vaccinated is of concern.
