Dortmund (dpa / lnw) - After an accident with an overturned dangerous goods truck in Dortmund, a poisonous liquid leaked during the rescue work.

When refilling the tank contents late Friday evening, something went wrong, said a fire department spokesman on Saturday.

Accordingly, the receiving truck was probably too small.

According to the spokesman, the substance is naphthalene, which is carcinogenic and harmful to health and the environment.

However, there was no danger to the environment or the population.

The transporter had tipped over on its side in a left turn on Friday afternoon for a previously unexplained cause.

Initially, no hazardous substance had leaked, reported the fire department.

The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Around midnight, however, some of the liquid leaked when pumping into another truck, the spokesman said.

500 to 1,000 liters ended up in the sewer system, on the street and on the grass verge.

The substance hardened in the air.

According to the police, the crossing area in the west of Dortmund was still closed on Saturday afternoon.

The truck still has to be recovered.

The measures and the cleaning of the street could continue until the evening, said the fire department spokesman.

Several media had previously reported on the incident.
