Today, Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a statement about the recent events in the US Congress building, and commented on the measures taken by Western governments to restrict the use of social networking sites.

Erdogan said that the recent events that took place in the United States of America and the European continent showed once again the double standards used against his country.

This came in a speech he gave today, Saturday, while he was participating remotely in the opening ceremony of a bridge in the southern state of Diyarbakir, via a video call from "Waheed Al-Din Palace" in Istanbul.

He added, "Many recent events in the United States and Europe have demonstrated once again the double standards used against Turkey."

"We are watching with astonishment how the most severe measures are applied at the first threat to those who accuse Turkey of not practicing democracy and limiting freedoms," he said.

He explained that those who "opposed Turkey's efforts to lay legal foundations for social media, have practiced the most primitive forms of censoring these means."

And he added, "Those who do not show the slightest complacency in confronting terrorism have tried to obstruct our struggle against terrorist organizations."

Shared values

Erdogan addressed what happened months ago in France during the anti-government protests, and said that such events should push the Western world to hold itself accountable "with regard to democracy and freedoms."

He indicated that there is an urgent need for new shared values based on the principle of truth and justice, which embrace all of humanity, and rise above racial, religious and ethnic discrimination.

The Turkish President expressed his hope that the political and economic structure of the world would be restructured after the Corona pandemic, in accordance with these shared values, and he stressed that Turkey defends these values intellectually and practically in the region and the world.

And Erdogan had said earlier that "the United States faced a reality that had never been witnessed in its history before, and it is the country that is said to be the cradle of democracy. What happened shocked all humanity and astonished us as well."

He continued, "When the events of the coup attempt (in 2016) and the events of Gezi Park (in 2013) in Turkey, the attitude of American officials and politicians was different and silent, so that threatening messages against us were published in the American media.

At the same time, the Turkish president expressed his hope that US President-elect Joe Biden would smoothly assume power on January 20, as pledged by outgoing President Donald Trump.

He added that the United States should enter a different stage in international relations.
