Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has said goodbye to the plan to again guarantee classroom lessons for pupils up to grade six regionally from mid-January.

The persistently high number of new corona infections had ruined the plans for the time being, said Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) on Friday in Schwerin.

Even the city of Rostock, which had only had a low number of infections for weeks, is only a little removed from the critical mark of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days.

For regions below this value, the state government had promised a complete opening of schools to the youngest students. This will not happen until at least the end of January. However, the care for pupils up to grade six who cannot be supervised at home by their parents for work-related reasons remains guaranteed. From Monday on, however, pupils in the final grades should be able to return to their schools to prepare for the exams. This also applies to the high-risk district of the Mecklenburg Lake District.
