Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Baden-Württemberg's vaccination centers can expect more than 20,000 doses of the newly approved Moderna vaccine in January.

Next Tuesday, initially 8,400 servings, two weeks later a further 12,000 servings, are to reach the southwest, according to a table published by the Federal Ministry of Health on Friday, available to the German Press Agency.

From the second week of February onwards, the amount increases sharply and, after 30,000 doses, reaches another 90,000 in the eighth calendar week (February 22-28).

In total, Baden-Württemberg will receive more than 140,000 doses of Moderna by the end of February in addition to the vaccine that has already been promised by the Mainz manufacturer Biontech.

The EU Commission approved the Moderna vaccine on Wednesday on the recommendation of the EMA drug authority.

Overall, Germany receives over 50 million of the more than 160 million Moderna cans ordered across the EU.

In the first quarter, due to the initially limited production capacity, only just under two million Moderna cans will come to Germany.

According to the EU Commission, the entire 160 million cans are to be delivered by September.

As things stand, Germany will receive a total of 140 million cans from Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna.

Around 60 million cans from Biontech / Pfizer are to go to Germany from the EU treaties, and another 30 million from bilateral agreements.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, these around 140 million doses are enough to create herd immunity in Germany.

In the past few days, there had been broad criticism of the strategy of the federal government and the federal states for the procurement, distribution and injection of vaccination doses.

Because of the ongoing bottlenecks in vaccine deliveries, the first syringes in the around 50 district vaccination centers (KIZ) will not be drawn up until January 22nd, a week later than originally planned.
