Berlin (dpa / bb) - A 31-year-old car driver in Berlin drove a long chase with the police for many kilometers and finally raced into the bus shelter at a bus stop.

Although he was seriously injured by the impact of his car in Marzahn on Thursday evening, he fled on foot and fiercely resisted his arrest.

Civilian police overcame him with the help of irritant gas, the police said on Friday.

The police found drugs, several thousand euros and a knife in the car.

Police initially wanted to check the driver at around 9.45 p.m. on Frankfurter Allee in Friedrichshain.

The man couldn't be stopped and fled.

On the Möllendorffstrasse, alerted plainclothes police discovered his car at a traffic light and stood in front of it with their car.

The man drove on, pushed the police vehicle aside and continued his escape.

Almost ten kilometers further, at the intersection of Boxberger Strasse and Am Cleantech Business Park, he ran into oncoming traffic due to excessive speed, rammed into the bus stop and suffered severe head, arm and leg injuries.

After his arrest, the man was taken to a hospital.

He didn't have a driver's license.
