Perth (AP) - Just a few weeks after the devastating bush fires on Fraser Island, fires are raging north of the city of Perth in Western Australia.

Hot and extremely dry weather with temperatures of over 40 degrees as well as strong winds made the situation extremely dangerous and made the extinguishing work very difficult.

This was reported by the portal "Perth Now", citing the authorities.

Thousands of hectares of bushland have already been burned in the past few days.

To prevent spread, nine national parks in the Perth region have been closed as a precaution, it said.

In some areas, people were told to go to safety if the roads were clear.

Around 150 firefighters were on the ground, supported by fire-fighting helicopters.

The cause of the fire was still unclear.

A fire that had lasted for weeks on the Australian sand island of Fraser Island was only brought under control in mid-December.

In the World Heritage site, emergency services have been fighting the flames that have destroyed half of the world-famous island since October.

The Australians hope to be spared from a fire disaster like last year.

Devastating bush fires had devastated over twelve million hectares of land in six of the eight Australian states and territories from August 2019 to March 2020.

More than 30 people died and almost three billion animals were damaged or killed, according to the environmental organization WWF.
