According to the newspaper, in recent weeks he discussed his chances with representatives of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

In January, the Federal Republic of Germany will hold a congress of conservatives, where a new head of the party will be elected, who will become a candidate for chancellor.

Three people officially apply for the post of head of the CDU: business lobbyist Friedrich Merz, Prime Minister of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet and head of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee Norbert Rötgen.

Earlier, Spahn supported Laschet's candidacy for the post of chairman of the union, however, according to media reports, he is considering the post of chancellor and inquired whether he can be nominated for this post, even if Laschet heads the CDU.

"Jens Spahn made me understand that he would be ready to nominate a candidate for the post of chancellor if his results in the polls in March are much better than those of Laschet," RIA Novosti quotes the newspaper's source.

In February 2020, the current leader of the CDU, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, announced her refusal to nominate for the post of chancellor.

In September 2021, elections to the Bundestag are scheduled in Germany.
