WORLD:

There is a small leak in the "International Space Station".

As a materials scientist, you could sure find it and stuff it quickly?

Matthias Maurer:

During my studies I actually learned to track down material defects in components.

Aircraft turbines, for example, have to be checked regularly for cracks.

WORLD:

How would you find the leak?

Maurer:

Small holes and cracks can be detected with ultrasound.

Alternatively, a special liquid can be applied to the area in question, which reflects UV light differently in the event of damage.

You can also use very sensitive microphones that make the flow of air through a hole audible.

Alexander Gerst found a leak and then sealed it.

Every astronaut learns all of this.

So you don't necessarily need me for that.

WORLD:

Your "ISS" mission is called "Cosmic Kiss".

Did you make that up yourself?
