Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - In 2020, the L-Bank paid out almost three billion euros in corona aid to the south-west economy.

"The Corona crisis is a crisis that really deserves the name," said CEO Edith Weymayr on Friday in Karlsruhe.

Large parts of the SME sector were well prepared for economic downturns.

With an equity ratio of 31.8 percent (as of 2019), the broader SME sector has gained enormous financial stability in recent years (2009: 26.3 percent).

“But such an exogenous shock as the corona pandemic cannot be mapped in corporate planning.

The slump quickly threatened the very existence of companies in the sectors particularly affected. "

In 2020, the development bank paid out around 2.8 billion euros in corona aid from federal and state programs to more than 262,000 companies.

The past year was marked by previously unknown turbulence.

In addition to Corona, the uncertainty about the further development of international economic relations and the feared increase in trade costs due to an unregulated Brexit would have influenced the investment decisions of companies.

In total, the state bank provided companies with around 6.3 billion euros in a wide variety of subsidies last year - from business start-up loans to funds to finance growth.
