At 1pm on Wednesday, outgoing President Donald Trump gave a speech to his supporters urging them to march to Congress to support the Republicans who were expected to contest the election result - shortly afterwards the building was stormed.

But the protesters were also cheered on social media - mainly via the conservative social media platforms Gab and Parler.

Many of the posts were shared under the hashtags #revolution fightback and #civilwar.

Discussions about armed revolution have been going on on social media since the election, often via groups such as Qanon and Proud Boys.

Ahead of Wednesday's demonstration, the discussions will become increasingly loud.

On Monday, more than half of the top comments on the site thedonald.win, which was about Wednesday's demonstration, contained calls for violence, reports the Washington Post.
