Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's Senator for Education Sandra Scheeres has defended the Senate's plans to gradually reopen the schools as appropriate despite the Corona lockdown.

"It is a conscious decision, a thought-out decision," said the SPD politicians on Thursday in the House of Representatives.

The consequences are incalculable if, for example, elementary school students are not in schools for six weeks.

That is why experts have recommended starting cautiously with the smallest: “So that they don't slip away,” says Scheeres.

Young people need a good education and school leaving certificates for their future.

It is therefore important to balance responsibly between the necessary health protection and the right to education.

"Here we just have to strike a good middle ground so that we have the best opportunities for our children, young people, families, but also for our teachers."

The negative consequences of several weeks of school closings during the first lockdown in spring can still be felt today, said Scheeres.

She mentioned learning performance, language deficits, obesity.

That too should be taken into account.

And again and again in the Corona crisis there is a demand for planning security.

"That is why it is correct to say that we will make a plan until after the holidays."

Of course, every decision is subject to the infection situation.

"If the situation worsens again, of course, every measure has to be discussed again," said Scheeres.

The Senate decided on Wednesday to gradually offer alternating lessons again from January 11, i.e. a combination of learning at home and in schools in small groups.

The graduation-relevant age groups should make the beginning, a week later elementary school students in grades 1 to 3 should follow.

After the winter holidays, it is hoped that classroom classes will be back to normal for everyone from February 15, as they were before the lockdown.
