For Barack Obama, the events in Washington are simply not a "surprise" given the attitude of Donald Trump and the Republicans.

The former US president especially launched a violent charge to qualify them.

He thus estimated Wednesday that the violence which took place in the Capitol was "a shame".

"History will remember the violence today on Capitol Hill, encouraged by a president who relentlessly lied about the outcome of an election, as a moment of dishonor and shame for our country," he said. he stated in a press release.

"But we would not look the truth in the face if we considered this event as a total surprise," he added, denouncing the "violent crescendo" of recent months, fueled by the Republicans' refusal to "tell the truth".

Today we faced an unprecedented assault on our Capitol, our Constitution, and our country.

The assault was fueled by more than four years of poison politics spreading deliberate misinformation, sowing distrust in our system, and pitting Americans against one another.
