Schwerin (dpa) - The project company for the controversial Baltic Sea gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 welcomes the planned establishment of a foundation with which the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also wants to support the completion of the pipeline.

Nord Stream 2 AG announced on Thursday that the foundation supports Germany's climate goals and enables the natural gas supply to be secured.

The later operation of the pipeline will continue to be carried out by Nord Stream 2 AG.

The state parliament in Schwerin had previously approved the state government's application at a special session.

The foundation, which is oriented towards the common good, aims to promote projects in the field of environmental, nature and climate protection, but also to be able to be commercially active.

The foundation plans to buy components and machines that are essential for the completion of the gas pipeline.

This is intended to circumvent threatened US sanctions against companies involved in the construction of the line as far as possible.

Environmental groups had criticized the establishment of the foundation.

Nord Stream 2 said natural gas is the most climate-friendly transition technology for securing the necessary energy supply.

Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) also presented gas as a necessary transition technology for the energy transition.

The USA, on the other hand, justify its resistance to the project with the fact that its European partners are too dependent on Russian gas.

The construction of the pipeline, which according to the state government costs around 11 billion euros, was interrupted shortly before completion at the end of 2019 after European companies bowed to pressure from the USA and pipe-laying ships pulled out of the Baltic Sea.
