07 January 2021 "Since the beginning of the pandemic, over 2 million 220 thousand Italians have been infected, one in every 27 of our fellow citizens: an impressive number".

The extraordinary Commissioner for the Covid emergency, Domenico Arcuri, said this during the weekly press conference.

Situation remains critical

"It is too early to assess the effects of the closures, which we hope are positive, arranged in the last 3 weeks. Our experts say that we will begin to see their extent from next week."

The current situation in terms of Covid "is another world compared to the first wave, but overall it is still critical. We are not yet out of the tunnel".

Fortunately, Arcuri recalled, "before as an antidote there were only closures, now we also have the vaccine".

Goal, vaccinate everyone by autumn

"Yesterday at the state-regions conference we said to ourselves that we have the goal of being able to vaccinate all Italians who want it by next autumn, but to achieve this goal, three components are needed: an adequate and sufficient number of doses of the vaccine, a logistical and organizational plan to carry this vaccine and an adequate number of men and women who can administer it. We do not produce vaccines, we cheer for the maximum number of pharmaceutical companies to be authorized to trade their products by the authorities. administering the first vaccine in previous pandemics took at least 8 years ".

Three components: vaccines, logistics and health plan

"We have delivered 919,425 doses of vaccine to 293 points of administration so far".

"Whoever says that at the rate of 65,000 vaccinations a day to vaccinate 60 million Italians it would take three years, is right - Arcuri acknowledged - If we had 60 million vaccines, this rate would have increased tenfold: but for the moment we have vaccines , in fact, 919 thousand ".

"We said that in the first phase the goal is at least to vaccinate 65-67 thousand people a day. It seems to me that we are succeeding, indeed we are also exceeding the goal".

At the appointment with vaccines, Italy was ready, but now "we need vaccines, because we don't produce them", said Arcuri.

"We do not produce vaccines, we cheer for the maximum number of those being tested to be authorized by the European and Italian authorities - he adds - We must and are managing to administer all the vaccines we have, but unfortunately we do not have 120 million yet. ".

"We have put in place a complex organizational system. We are the second in Europe or the first country per inhabitant in the ranking of vaccinated people. An important and not obvious result. Have we reached our goal or exceeded a goal? Not at all. We started for well this long crossing, we have shown that we know how to coordinate, that we all row towards the same port in a spirit of admirable collaboration. I thank all the governors for the effort and passion they are putting in. If I can I have to thank the staff even more health care, "he added.

"We had asked all the doctors and nurses to help us with vaccinations, as we speak we have 19,499 applications, and there are another 5,098 in the pipeline. If everyone completes the process, we will reach 24,599 doctors, nurses and health assistants who have want to give us a hand ".

Herd immunity 80% of the population

"In order to achieve the so-called herd immunity, according to experts, 80% of the population will have to be vaccinated, therefore more or less 48 million Italians".

"We cheer - he added - so that all Italians who want to be vaccinated are 'all Italians'. But they will tell us this only in the coming months".

In February vaccine for the over 80s

"Who will be vaccinated? The plan specifies quite clearly the categories in order of time, starting with the doctors and nurses of the hospitals, about 1.8 million people, the most exposed. It continues with the over 80s. , in February, about 4 million, it continues with teaching staff, law enforcement, public transport personnel. It continues with people who are over 60 years old. The scan by category is defined, based on the exposure of the infection, discussing it is important but not understanding that the scan is based on the endowments that we will gradually have is unfair ".
