Cloppenburg (dpa / lni) - Once again, avian influenza, which is highly contagious for animals, was found in two turkey farms in Garrel near Cloppenburg.

As the district of Cloppenburg announced on Thursday, herds of 14,000 and 9,000 turkeys had to be killed due to the detection of the pathogen type H5N8.

A total of around 171,000 animals have been killed in the district so far, 154,000 turkeys and 17,000 ducks.

On Tuesday, the highly pathogenic virus was detected for the first time in a duck fattening operation in Garrel.

The district has now corrected the number of animals affected there downwards.

At first there was talk of 36,000 ducks.

The animal owner reported this number to the animal disease fund.

In fact, the district's veterinary office found that there were only 17,000 animals.

Due to the low demand due to the corona pandemic, only one stable of the company was occupied.
