Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The state association for renewable energies (LEE) calls for the introduction of a solar roof requirement for newly built houses in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The state should follow the example of Hamburg and supplement the state building regulations with a corresponding regulation, said the managing director of the LEE NRW, Christian Mildenberger, on Thursday according to the announcement.

The Hamburg Climate Protection Act stipulates that photovoltaic systems must be installed on the roofs of new buildings from 2023.

Existing buildings will have to be equipped with a photovoltaic system from 2025 if the roof is completely renovated.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, only six percent of the existing solar potential is currently used on roof areas, criticized Mildenberger.

That is far too little to achieve the energy transition and climate protection goals.

Solar systems on the roof are also in the interests of building owners and tenants.

Because solar power generation on the roof pays off financially.

In December, NRW construction minister Ina Scharrenbach (CDU) announced that photovoltaic systems would be mandatory in future over newly built open parking areas with more than 25 spaces in North Rhine-Westphalia.

"From there it has to go further, because the potential on the roofs in the country is a thousand times greater," said Mildenberger.
