After the events in Washington, Democratic congressmen from the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Vice President Mike Pence urging him to remove Donald Trump from power.

The letter was posted on Twitter by one of its authors, Congressman David Cicilline.

“It is with great sadness that we write to you about the events that took place today in the Capitol.

You were presiding over the Senate when disaffected Donald Trump supporters attempted an uprising by illegally bursting into the US Capitol building to interrupt confirmation that Joe Biden won the presidential election, ”the lawmakers said in a statement.

In their letter, the parliamentarians referred to the 25th amendment to the basic law, which enables the vice-president and the cabinet of ministers to remove the current head of state due to "inability to fulfill their duties."

“Even in his today's video message, Donald Trump demonstrated that he is mentally unwell and still unable to accept and recognize the results of the 2020 elections.

For the sake of our democracy, we strongly urge you to apply the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and begin the process of removing President Trump from power.

The President repeatedly demonstrates that he does not want to defend our democracy and fulfill his official duties, ”the politicians say.

The appeal was signed by a total of 19 Democratic congressmen sitting on the House Jurisprudence Committee.

A similar appeal was made by the leader of the Democratic minority in the Senate Chuck Schumer, as well as Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

"If the vice president and cabinet do not act, Congress may be ready to move forward on the path of impeachment ... This is an urgent need of the highest importance," Pelosi said.

She added that Trump is a very dangerous person who should not be in the presidency.

According to her, he "fomented an armed rebellion against America."

"" - she added.

In turn, CNN claims that Republicans and cabinet members also called for Trump's removal.

However, only anonymous statements are given in the channel's material.

Calls to remove Trump from power less than two weeks before the official end of his term (Joe Biden's inauguration is due on January 20) came against the backdrop of the January 6 events in Washington.

On this day, the US Congress, led by Vice President Mike Pence, was supposed to certify the electoral college votes in the 2020 presidential election.

Recall that, according to official data, Democrat Joe Biden received 306 votes from the 270 board required to win.

These data were confirmed by a board vote on December 14.

Trump, meanwhile, has repeatedly stated that the vote was flawed, and its results in key states, where the victory was awarded to Biden, despite the initial leadership of the Republican, is nothing more than the result of stuffing and rigging.

Trump and his campaign team challenged the election results in court, but their claims were not satisfied.

In Congress on January 6, a meeting was to be held under the chairmanship of Vice President Mike Pence, at which Biden's victory would be officially approved after a recount of the college votes.

On the eve, Trump said that Pence has the power to revise the results of the November 3 presidential election, rejecting electoral votes from the disputed states.

Supporters of the incumbent head of the White House gathered on Wednesday in Washington to rally against the approval of Biden's victory.

Trump addressed them with a speech, once again calling the election results rigged.

Shortly before that, he on his Facebook criticized Pence, who refused to interfere with the approval of Biden's victory.

After the president's speech, his followers surrounded the Capitol building, where the congress was being chaired by Pence.

They clashed with the police, who responded with tear gas.

However, Trump supporters were able to break into the Capitol - they occupied the Senate Hall and several offices, including the workplace of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

As a result, the congressional meeting was interrupted, Vice President Mike Pence and lawmakers were evacuated through underground tunnels under the building.

Donald Trump himself, via Twitter, urged his supporters to act peacefully and later made a video message.

Four people were killed in the riots, according to the Washington police.

Trump's "last hopes"

Despite protests, Congress eventually approved Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election.

Donald Trump, in turn, announced that he was ready to transfer power on time.

“Despite the fact that I absolutely disagree with the election results and the facts speak in my favor, an orderly transition of power will take place on January 20.

I have always said that we will continue to fight to ensure that only legitimate votes are counted.

And while this is the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, this is only the beginning of our struggle to return America to its former greatness! ”- said in a statement from Trump.

As Vladimir Vasiliev, chief researcher at the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences, stated in an interview with RT, the "last hopes" of the 45th President of the United States to revise the election results did not come true.

“Trump hoped that Pence could use his constitutional powers to deny the results of the electoral college vote.

I am sure that between them it was decided how Pence should behave at this meeting.

However, the vice president acted differently.

It is impossible now to clearly understand what actually happened there.

Perhaps this behavior of Pence is connected to some extent with the demonstration of Trump's supporters, or it is a manifestation of his duality, "the political scientist argues.

From his point of view, the American political establishment and the media were clearly not ready for the events that took place in Washington.

“Perhaps politicians and the media believed that this was a peaceful procession, that the protesters would gather, shout and disperse, and did not expect what ultimately happened.

It was important for Trump and his supporters to use the crowd, to put pressure on Pence.

But it scared the ruling class, ”Vasiliev says.

According to Konstantin Blokhin, a researcher at the Center for Security Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the likelihood of Trump being removed from the post of head of state as a result of impeachment or other measures is extremely small.

“Do not expect Trump to be removed from office - after all, there are less than two weeks before he leaves the White House.

In addition, this procedure itself takes time, which actually does not exist.

Most likely, in this way, the Democrats want to demonstrate to society that all problems, including the polarization of society, are the work of Trump, "the expert noted.

Making the current head of the White House the culprit of all difficulties, representatives of the Democratic Party plan to get out of the water and stabilize the situation in the country, Blokhin is sure.

"Everything that is happening now can also be viewed as a vendetta for Trump," the analyst stressed.

In his opinion, the reputation losses incurred by Trump due to the fact that he was unable to deter his supporters from actions that led to death and condemnation in the world are unlikely to allow him to remain in the sphere of public politics.

“Trump is unlikely to pursue a career in this area.

I doubt he will run for president in 2024.

On the contrary, one can expect that he will finally leave politics, but his ideas in one form or another will remain in the Republican Party, "Blokhin concluded.
