Munich (AP) - Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) is pulling the rip cord in the fight against the corona pandemic: Söder is replacing the previous Minister of Health Melanie Huml (CSU) and replacing her with her State Secretary and head of the Corona Task Force Klaus Holetschek (CSU).

Holetschek has recently proven to be a doer, also in cooperation with the municipalities in Bavaria, said Söder after a cabinet meeting on Wednesday in Munich.

"This is a sovereign decision that is discussed with everyone," said Söder.

I think the lineup is the best.

Bamberg's Huml, a doctor herself, had already made an unfortunate figure in some phases of the anti-corona fight.

In August, when there was a serious breakdown in the corona tests propagated by Söder for return travelers and those who tested positive had not found out about their test results, there had already been calls for resignation against Huml.

Most recently there had been questions about the sluggish vaccination campaign in Bavaria.

In some places there were problems transporting the vaccine, and seniors complained that no vaccination appointments could be made.

Söder had made the corona policy more and more a top priority.

In future, Huml will work as a minister in the State Chancellery.

Söder thanked the 45-year-old for her commitment and her performance.

"I appreciate Melanie very much," said Söder.
