According to media reports, 52 members of the democracy movement in Hong Kong were arrested on Wednesday.

They were accused of violating the controversial national security law introduced by China, reports the South China Morning Post and the Now News website.

The background is, therefore, that they held an unofficial primary last year with which they wanted to increase their chances of entering the Hong Kong Legislative Council.

At least seven members of the opposition Democratic Party, including former chairman Wu Chi Wai, were reportedly among those arrested.

Former MPs Helena Wong, Lam Cheuk Ting and James To have also been arrested, the party's Facebook page said.
