Arnsberg / Berlin (dpa) - The FDP member of the Bundestag Carl-Julius Cronenberg has rated a skiing holiday in Switzerland in the middle of the German corona lockdown as a mistake.

"I understand the criticism of this decision and would like to apologize for it," said the 58-year-old on Wednesday at the request of the German press agency.

"Despite my critical attitude towards the Corona policy of the grand coalition, I should have acted as a role model as a member of the Bundestag," he admitted in writing.

Previously, the news portal “Sauerlandkurier.de” reported on the trip of the Arnsberg entrepreneur and FDP member.

Accordingly, Cronenberg had spent several days with his family in the Swiss canton of Valais over the turn of the year to go skiing there.

Compared to the online portal from his constituency Hochsauerland, Cronenberg had justified his decision with the fact that he had assessed the situation in his holiday resort to be significantly more risk-free than, for example, the situation in some Sauerland snow areas.

“I myself lived in Switzerland for years and am always there for work, so I know how strictly and consistently the hygiene concepts are implemented and adhered to there.

We made a conscious decision to go to the holiday destination, ”he was quoted as saying.

"I was not someone who yelled in the past: stay at home and close all hotels," continued Cronenberg.

He always advocated local measures depending on the local infection rate.

In view of the tense Corona situation and the development of new infections, numerous politicians and experts appealed to the population to refrain from tourist trips during the Christmas holidays.
