The earthquake started at 03:03 in the morning local time and had a magnitude of 5, but a 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred shortly thereafter.

The largest earthquake occurred on August 24, local time, with a magnitude of 6.0 and a focal depth of 23 kilometers. The epicenter is located in Puntarena. Garabito region in Sri Lanka.
