Hellenthal (dpa) - The measures against the onslaught of snow tourists in the Eifel community of Hellenthal seem to be working.

"The situation is a little more relaxed," said a representative of the 8,000-inhabitant community on Tuesday.

The destination for winter tourists was visited by thousands of excursionists on the weekend in the middle of the corona pandemic and had experienced traffic chaos.

As a result, the city blocked parking spaces at excursion destinations.

Lifts in the ski area and snow hiking trails were already closed.

On Tuesday, city employees checked that parking bans and corona regulations were being observed.

In Winterberg in the Sauerland, slopes and parking spaces have been closed since Sunday.

With a view to the coming weekend, the mayors of Hellenthal and the neighboring towns in the Euskirchen district want to coordinate, the spokesman said. The neighboring communities had also suffered from the onslaught. Since there were no offers due to the corona, some gardens were used as toilets and cars were parked wildly on the roadside and in meadows.
