Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Due to the tense Corona situation, almost all schoolchildren in Saxony-Anhalt will have to study from home for weeks from Monday.

Education Minister Marco Tullner (CDU) said after a cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening there will only be daily face-to-face classes for the final classes after the Christmas break.

Small groups should be formed in order to maintain the rules of distance and hygiene.

All other children and adolescents should receive tasks and online offers for at home.

The daycare centers are also closing and only offer emergency care for children whose parents work in systemically important professions, as Social Minister Petra Grimm-Benne (SPD) said.

The schools should provide emergency care for pupils in the first to sixth grades.

This means that school and daycare operations will once again be restricted as significantly as they were last only in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic.

How long the drastic measure will apply is open.

The federal and state governments agreed on Tuesday afternoon to extend the strict restrictions on public life until at least January 31 - and to shut down school operations for at least that long.

The aim is to finally contain the pandemic after months of restrictions on public life and to significantly reduce the number of new infections.

In Saxony-Anhalt, according to the latest figures from the Ministry of Health, 195 out of 100,000 people from Saxony-Anhalt were verifiably infected with the virus in the past seven days.

This value should be reduced below 50.
