Saarbrücken (dpa / lrs) - The Saarland faces more weeks of tough lockdown.

The measures to contain the corona pandemic will be extended until January 31 and in some cases even tightened, as Saarland Prime Minister Tobias Hans announced on Tuesday after consultations with his counterparts and Chancellor Angela Merkel (both CDU).

This means: the retail trade, with the exception of shops for everyday needs, is still closed - as is the gastronomy as well as cultural and leisure facilities.

The contact restrictions are tightened: In the future, private get-togethers will only be permitted with members of your own household and with a maximum of one other person.

So far, a maximum of five people from two households were allowed to come together.

"That is a considerable burden, but it is necessary to prevent a third wave from coming our way," said Hans.

In addition, the lockdown at schools and daycare centers will be extended until the end of January - the presence requirement remains suspended.

The state government will now be discussing how this should be implemented.

The aim is still to contain the corona pandemic.

The numbers are still too high, said Hans.

And you don't know how the holidays have affected.

The lockdown can only be ended when the incidence has fallen to 50 new infections per 100,000 people in seven days.

On Tuesday this value was 126 in Saarland.

The lockdown measures that have been in effect since mid-December were originally decided by January 10.

It was also agreed that in counties with high numbers of corona infections, further measures should be taken to limit the range of motion to 15 kilometers around the place of residence.

This should apply to districts with a 7-day incidence of over 200 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants - unless there is a valid reason.

In Saarland, no district is currently affected, said Hans.
